My Mum’s Dream

My mum’s dream is to live in less than 19 feet.

Her campervan is 19 feet long,

But she spends her time thinking how to reduce it to 17.

What are the bare essentials of a pared-down modern life?

A fridge; heating and cooling.

A bed, a table, a stove.

Some form of what may be termed a toilet.

A few cupboards for storage under the seat.

A 17-foot pop-top campervan.

To travel the world.

Sometimes she uses my shower when she tires of the baby wipes.

In the Bedouin village of Qawawis, Israelis from the overlooking settlement of Mitzpayayil forcibly entered into the dwellings of the villagers. They danced, sung, told stories, and played soccer while the Palestinians watched from the sidelines.

Later that evening, they returned to their settlement and had a Shabbat dinner.

The Charcoal Makers

Charcoal, called faham in Arabic, is manufactured by hand in Arraba, near Jenin in the north of the West Bank. Workers live in shacks next to the charcoal piles. They stack chopped wood, cover it, and leave it to burn for ten days. The charcoal is then harvested and sold.

Fathee removed his false teeth as a practical joke. Another worker said, “He is the one that keeps us sane.”

Physicians for Human Rights

Physicians for Human Rights(Israel) is an NGO that provides medical services such as mobile clinics in the West Bank. Israeli physicians spend a weekend day providing free medical care at a primary school.

In 2003, PHR(I) conducted 46 clinics, in which 350 physicians and 260 other volunteers examined and treated 16,000 patients. [PHR website on new page]

Going to School

At Al Tiwani in the South Hebron hills in the West Bank, Palestinian children from the small, neighbouring village of Tuba needed to be escorted to school by Israeli soldiers, and—when they failed to show up—by international peace activists such as the Christian Peacemaker Teams. When forced to detour, the children had to walk up to six miles to get from their small village to the central school.

Israelis from the Ma’on settlement overlooking the path had harassed the children by throwing stones at them.
